Control Panel Tip
by John Zaleski

Steve Workings' tip on keeping all tables and sets in an application in one directory is very valuable. However, it is not very difficult to accidentally create a table or a set in a directory other than the desired one. (Take a look at the message board on this subject.)

I find that it is a good idea to always keep the control panel in the "Detail" mode rather than "Large Icons", "Small Icons" or "List" mode. This displays the table or set name as well as the "Full Name" which includes the path name. Every time I add a table or a set to an application, I check the "Tables-Sets" tab and make sure that all tables and sets are in the correct directory by looking at the "Full Name". Additionally, at the end of a development session I do the same thing. Keeping the control panel in "Detail" mode has the added benefit of being able to sort by the full name and, for instance, see all reports related to one set together.

As Steve said in a prior tip:
"Keep all files related to a single database in one directory to save yourself -- and maybe others -- a lot of headaches later"

Editors note: While always staying in the "Detail" mode is subject to personal preference, using the "Detail" mode as recommended to verify table and set locations can certainly save a lot of headaches later on.
