I have been beta testing Version 5 as much as time will allow for the last 12 months and have been fascinated by its evolution into the product it is now. Being a true Brit I see Version 5 as the Concorde of database development, very fast and very sophisticated. Top marks to Selwyn and his dedicated team for their work and their rapid response to any issues I have raised with the various betas.
I have been working with Alpha database products since I happened across Alpha 4 version 3 many years ago. The company I am IT director of, are the largest manufacturer of coffin furnishings (handles, name plates etc) in Europe and initially Alpha was put to use creating databases to handle data extracted from our Sales and Manufacturing system. One of our tables contains all our sales order lines going back to 1993 and has over a million records. Some years ago I sat down to write an application for our existing customer base funeral directors and to date we have over 175 users on more than 120 different sites in the United Kingdom. Version 5 will take our product another giant step forward with the advent of features such as Email, direct output into Word or similar and more prosaic benefits such as being able to configure the appearance of look up lists. In addition to our mainstream product we have designed a number of one off applications for clients whose businesses range from Market Research to Jewellery Wholesaling.
